This is an excellent site for metal detecting and specimen collecting. Some of the nicest Jaspers I have found were collected near here. The topography shows Free Time mining claim as encompassing both sides of a ridge. Because the placers are deep enough to cover any existing veins, it is a matter of following the quartz up hill in hopes of finding its origin. The number and quality of specimens from this area is impressive as this also shows a huge amount of volcanic activity from days gone by. If metal detecting and/or rockhounding is your thing, you will enjoy this claim.
Free Time does have cattle grazing fences on it and they are only a small inconvenience as there are many places to park around the claim for easy access or you can use a folding ladder.
This claim is located in the Black Hills area about 5 miles directly North of Wickenburg. There are places near the claim to camp if you want. It has great access and an interestingly bizarre amount of geologic activity for the amateur geologist to take in, from metamorphic to volcanic events and more. The dirt in this area has less iron and clay in it, which tends to make it easier to drywash. Wet washing is easier because there is less clay to thicken the water. Also noted is much more caliche, which acts as a barrier to keep gold from dropping further toward bedrock. As you will see in a pictures, caliche traps the gold so nuggets are often found near the surface on top of the caliche. We did bring in a geologist that confirmed the presence of gold bearing quartz in the area trending from the Black Hills west at about 272 degrees. We have been exploring this area for nearly 10 years and always come up with some awesome specimens of gold and other minerals. In addition to gold, .......... jasper, agate, green tourmaline, black tourmaline, topaz, garnet, epidot, and other minerals are pretty common in this area.
Located off of Scenic Loop Road & Rincon, access doesn't get any better than this! There are a couple major areas with exposed granite bedrock that would be great for vacuuming. Trumpets plants (a great indicator of mineral rich soil) are scattered throughout the claim along with many different rock specimens like quarts, red jasper, olivine, etc.
